Recently, I heard a song for the first time from Hillsong UNITED titled “Another in the Fire”.

If you haven’t already, I would highly recommend listening: YouTube Video

The chorus says, “there was another in the fire, standing next to me”. Now in case you are not familiar with it, this is a reference to the miracle recorded in Daniel, chapter 3, that happened with Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego. In that time, King Nebuchadnezzar had these three men thrown into a furnace for not bowing down and worshipping him. Then as he looked into the fiery furnace, he saw not just three men but a fourth [Jesus].

It is in this moment of trouble and seemingly impending peril that these men are rescued and protected by the Lord.

Have you ever felt like you were in a situation as Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego? Feeling as though you were being persecuted because of your faith in Christ or your denial to worship things of this world? Hopefully, you have not been literally put to the fire but figuratively most of us probably have at one time or another. The world does not take kindly to those who do not conform to its ways and tends to persecute those who refuse to do so.

In those moments we have the choice to give in and conform or to hold to our faith, as Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, and be obedient to what the Lord calls us to. For followers of Christ, as obvious as the right choice may be, it doesn’t make the situation any easier.

However, no matter the outcome, we can rest in the truth that we have One who will stand in the fire with us.
